The National Games of the Republic of China (The National Games for short) is the most prominent sporting event in Taiwan. The National Games were restructured from the Taiwan Provincial Games and the Taiwan Regional Games. The Taiwan Provincial Games was held 28 times from the inaugural year of 1946 to 1973. In1974, it was renamed the Taiwan Regional Games in response to Taipei and Kaohsiung's elevated status of direct-controlled municipalities. From 1999, when the event was once again renamed as the National Games, it was held every two years due to the restructuring of government function and organization. Additionally , in order to popularize non-Asian and Olympic Games sports, the Citizens Games are held once every two years in alternation with the National Games. Starting in 2013, the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education is in charge of related affairs of the National Games and Citizens Games. Taipei City Government is hosting the event for the 6th time after 19 years since 1994, with participating teams representing cities and counties across the nation. Besides venues in Taipei City, those in New Taipei City, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Taichung City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County and Yilan County are also arranged for the event. The event includes 29 compulsory sports: Athletics, Aquatic sports (swimming), Weightlifting, Cycling, Shooting, Archery, Canoeing, Basketball, Handball, Badminton, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Tennis (including Soft Tennis), Baseball (including Softball), Hockey, Golf, Wrestling, Boxing, Fencing, Taekwondo, Judo, Gymnastics (Artistic and Rhythmic), Football, Sailing, Rowing, Equestrian, Rugby, Modern Pentathlon and Triathlon, as well as 5 optional sports: Bowling, Karate, Martial Arts, Billiards and Go. This year's National Games will be held from October 19th(Saturday) to October 24th(Thursday).
